Centro Cultural Conde Duque
An eighteenth-century barracks turned municipal arts centre, with a courtyard that hosts the summer programme.
Built in the 1720s as barracks for the royal guard, Conde Duque is now a city-run arts centre: exhibitions, a library, a concert hall, and two enormous courtyards. Much of the programme is free or close to it, which is the point — this is public cultural infrastructure rather than a ticketed attraction.
In summer the main courtyard becomes an outdoor venue for the city's Veranos de la Villa season. The rest of the year it is one of the better places in central Madrid to sit down and not spend money.
