Madrid Río
A motorway buried underground and replaced with ten kilometres of park along the Manzanares.
Until 2011 this was a ring road running along both banks of the river. The city put it in a tunnel and built a linear park on the lid — which is the single best thing Madrid has done to itself in fifty years, and almost no visitor goes.
It is for running, cycling, the outdoor pools in summer, and crossing the spiral steel footbridge at Arganzuela for no reason. It also connects straight to Matadero, the old slaughterhouse that is now the city's main contemporary arts complex.
