Cuesta de Moyano
A permanent row of wooden secondhand book kiosks on the slope below the Retiro.
Thirty-odd green wooden kiosks in a line on the hill between Atocha and the Retiro, selling secondhand and antiquarian books. They have been there since the 1920s, they are still independently run, and they are one of the few genuinely old retail things left in central Madrid.
Most of the stock is in Spanish, which is the point rather than a problem — the pleasure is in the browsing and the prints and the old paperback covers. Sunday mornings there is usually something on.
