Passeggiata del Gianicolo
The terrace above Trastevere with the whole city laid out below it, and almost no queue.
The Janiculum is not one of Rome's seven hills, which is partly why it gets left off itineraries. It also has the best view in the city — the full spread of domes and rooftops, with St Peter's to the right and the hills behind. There is a terrace, a line of busts of Garibaldi's followers, and a cannon fired at midday.
Walk up through Trastevere in the hour before sunset. Coming down afterwards puts you in Trastevere exactly at dinner time, which is not an accident.
Before you go
- Best time
- The hour before sunset
- The cannon
- Fired daily at noon — loud, and a small crowd gathers for it
- Route
