The Trastevere lanes
Ivy, cobbles and ochre walls — an entirely different neighbourhood before and after dark.
Trastevere is two places. Before about eleven in the morning it is a quiet residential district of narrow lanes, scooters, laundry and ivy, with the odd person sweeping a step. After about nine at night it is one of the busiest drinking neighbourhoods in Italy.
Both are worth seeing; they just are not the same visit. If you only have one go, take the morning one — walk in from the river, get lost west of Piazza di Santa Maria, and come out at the foot of the Janiculum.
Before you go
- Two neighbourhoods
- Quiet and residential before midday; very busy after 21:00
- Surface
- Sampietrini cobbles throughout — awkward in anything but flat shoes
