Mercato Testaccio
The neighbourhood market that is worth crossing the city for, especially at lunchtime.
Testaccio's market moved into a purpose-built modern hall in 2012 and kept its character, which is not a trick many markets manage. It is still largely a produce and butcher market used by people who live here, with a run of lunch counters along one side doing sandwiches, pasta and fried things to a standard the centre cannot match for the price.
Mornings for the stalls, around one o'clock for lunch. It closes in the afternoon, so this is not an evening plan.
